African American History: Websites

The National Archives holds a wealth of material documenting the African American experience and highlights these resources online, in programs, and through traditional and social media.

African Americans have played a central role in shaping U.S. history. From slavery and its abolition to the Great Migration, the civil rights movement and military, scientific, cultural and political achievements, explore key moments, milestones and figures in Black History.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

The New Orleans Public Library first opened its doors in 1897, but it would take more than 16 years for the Library to serve all New Orleanians. This is the history of the Dryades and Nora Navra branches of the New Orleans Public Library.

This February, the museum is celebrating Black History Month with educational programs, ongoing tours and activities, and our award-winning public programs.
