Every year on June 19th we celebrate the ending of slavery in the United States. The enslaved were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation, but it wasn’t until 1865 that the last of the enslaved were told. On June 19th, 1865 federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed.
