AI & ChatGPT Citing & Resources: Home

AI & ChatGPT

If you decide to use ChatGPT or other Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, make sure to check with your instructor if you can do soand if so what exactly is permitted for a specific assignment.  Make sure to cite the information you use in the text and in the reference list.

Weaknesses of using AI for research:

  • Accuracy, it is not design to produce factually accurate information
  • Currency, as of January 2023 it has been trained on materials from 2021 and earlier
  • Bias, it will replicated the biases in its training material
  • Information behind paywalls, it may not have had access to certain information that isn't freely available

MLA Style

The Modern Language Association (MLA) Style is commonly used for writing papers and citing references for scholarly publication. It is used particularly in fields of the humanities such as literature, languages and cultural studies.

APA Style

American Psychological Association (APA) Style is commonly used for citing references in science and social science courses, such as Nursing, Psychology, Education, and Social Work.

APA Style entails not only crediting sources in a particular format but also writing clearly, concisely, and without bias.

Using AI (Artificial intelligence)?

If you choose to use ChatGPT or some other AI technology for writing, be sure you are transparent about your use of it with your teachers. Rules for citing ChatGPT are not yet fully established. It has been recommended that the information is cited similar to a personal communication of some kind (emails, phone conversations, text messages, etc.)  Cite the communicator's name, the phrase "personal communication," and the date of the communication in your text only" for APA style.

Example: (Chat, GPT, personal communication," Feb. 22, 2023).
