MANG 206 Introduction to Logistics
This is the recommended “starter course” for the six online logistics courses. It is a survey of the components of logistics operations including transportation management, logistics operations, supply chain management, warehouse and inventory management and manufacturing logistics. These are the course topics:

  • Logistics management: an overview
  • Logistics environments
  • Supply chain management
  • Global logistics
  • Inventory in the logistics system
  • Inventory decision making
  • The transportation system
  • Transportation management
  • Warehousing decisions
  • Material handling and packaging
  • Facility location
  • Logistics quality
  • Organization of the logistics function
  • Logistics strategy

Simulation Model:
The course offers one online simulation model developed by SCM Globe that is a practical application of logistics operations.

MANG 208 Transportation Management
Logistics operations move product from the raw material stage through to the end user. This is accomplished by a network of transportation services including truck, rail, river barge, ocean carriers, air freight and pipeline. Quite often, a product is moved through a variety of these services. The transportation service must deliver the best combination of cost and speed of delivery. This transportation efficiency changes with the type of product. This is the task of transportation management. The topics of this course are:

  • The basic terminology and transport operations in the context of today’s business environment
  • The effectiveness of transportation management and transport mode selection processes
  • To recognize areas for improvement in transportation management operations
  • The cause and effect of each mode of transportation on the business operation
  • The physical and economic issues related to each of the different transportation modes.
  • The effect of transportation upon the entire supply chain
  • The importance of strategic alliances and the impact of centralized versus decentralized networks
  • Basic international issues involved in transportation.

MANG 220 Operations Management
Any organization that provides a service or produces a product or both, must have a means of managing the resources, which includes people, raw materials, the production process and delivery of the products and services to the end user. Operations management is the study of this process. The topics of this course are:

  • Operations management as a competitive advantage for the organization
  • Sourcing strategies including outsourcing and insourcing
  • Influences of the global competitive environment on operations management
  • The goals and stages of project management
  • Sales and operations planning
  • The total cost of quality and compare the common methods of managing quality
  • Options for managing bottlenecks and managing capacity in service and manufacturing processes
  • Factors affecting facility location decision and common methods for location selection
  • The types of operations processes and layouts in manufacturing and in services
  • The importance of supply chain management with respect to effective and efficient human resources
  • Common approaches to supply chain design
  • Options for measuring supply chain performance
  • The advantages and disadvantages of common inventory systems
  • The stages of short-term and long-term scheduling
  • Material requirements planning (MRP)
  • The advantages and disadvantages of various production strategies such as lean

MANG 229 Supply Chain Management
Supply chain management is a management function similar to operations management, but it is different in focus. This is a process of managing the movement of all phases of a product from raw material to delivery to the end user. The management activities can be grouped under information management, financial management and product management. Operations management addresses a broader scope of business activity to address the entire company operation.
The topics of this course are:

  • The development of supply chain management in leading organizations and its contributions to company financial profitability
  • The effect of supply chain management on customer service, corporate performance, and competitive advantage
  • The impact of logistics on the economy and how efficient and effective logistics management contributes to the vitality of the economy
  • The complexity of a global supply chain network and the challenges for the global supply chain to be competitive
  • The scope and importance of supply chain performance measurement

MANG 230 Warehouse and Inventory Management
Warehouse operations are a key function for moving product from seller to buyer. Inventory management is the system for accounting for all products as they move through the warehouse from receiving to shipping to the customer.
These are the course topics:

  • Warehousing, material management, logistics and supply chain terms
  • Warehouse operations
  • Warehouse layout and operations issues facing industry today
  • Supply chain management and function in warehouse operations
  • The interaction of warehousing and materials management
  • Key benchmark areas for warehouse operations

MANG 265 Manufacturing Logistics
Manufacturing logistics addresses the process of managing raw materials and finished goods in companies that receive raw materials and produce finished goods. This covers a great variety of operations. Some examples are food manufacturers, oil refineries, shipyards, industrial and consumer goods.
These are the course topics:

  • Operations and Productivity
  • Operations Strategy for Competitive Advantage
  • Operations in a Global Environment
  • Forecasting raw material requirements and finished goods production
