Evaluating Web Sources: Evaluating the Purpose

*Remember*

  • Currently, no web standards exist to ensure accuracy of information.
  • An author should consider all viewpoints on the topic.

Determine the Purpose of the Site

  • Who is the intended audience?
  • What is the purpose of the site? To provide information? Advertise? Persuade?
  • Are the goals of the site clearly indicated?
  • Is there a disclaimer included in page?

Objectivity

  • Beware of information and sources that are too subjective.
  • What goals or objectives does the page have?
  • How detailed is the information on it?
  • Does the author express any opinions?
  • Determine if the page is really an advertisment; if it is, information could be biased.
  • View a web page like a television commercial.  Ask yourself: why was this made and for whom?
